New Subcontract Services

Somers are now offering hire work forging, subcontract heat treatment and subcontract machining. The new services will offer huge benefits to manufacturers, giving our customers more flexibility without the capital requirements and associated maintenance costs. You can improve your supply chains by choosing us with our massive range of equipment and experienced workforce.

Our hire work forging offers customers a huge capacity to forge from as little as 1kg to 80 tonnes and machine up to 100 tonnes. With our expertise are able to process a range of materials from Titanium, Super Alloys, Carbon, Steels, Low Alloys, Stainless steels, Nickel Alloys and Bronze alloys.

We are proud to be offering the first opportunity for subcontract machining on the largest horizontal deep hole borer in Europe, boring lengths up to 20m. Our machine shop is equipped with turning, milling, boring, drilling machines and sawing.

With heat treatment now being offered as a subcontract service, this gives our customers a wealth of metallurgic expertise to meet a wide range of international standards. We offer many types including annealing, normalising, hydrogen diffusion, tempering, water quenching, oil quenching, stress relieving and post weld heat treatment methods.

Somers Forge STEM Project

We are very proud to of taken part in the STEM Project 2019 and mentor children from local school, Windsor High School.

We wanted to show the future generation that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, play a vital role in their future careers. Our aim was to boost the student’s engagement in these key topics and to show them how Somers Forge are environmentally friendly through the investment in the latest technology.

As a company we are conscious that we must protect the environment for the future generations.  Working closely with mentor Victoria Allen, the students looked to create an idea which could help reduce the carbon dioxide created through the forging process.

Sequestration can reduce global warming and in an environment such as the steel industry, there is a growing need to create greener solutions. Carbon sequestration; a natural or artificial process by which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and held in solid or liquid form. The students researched the effects on plants from burning fuels and thus the concept to create a plant box which would be attached onto chimneys was created.

The students took this one step further and used recyclable materials for the challenge.  Future developments highlighted for the prototype included having the sensors linked to a app, allowing for more convenient monitoring.

At Somers we manufacture in accordance with the International Environment Management System BS 14001:2015 and are a member of the Climate Change Levy.

Forged Drop/Breaker Ball

For many years Somers Forge have supplied high integrity forged drop / breaker balls, to both the mining and metal reclamation industries. Our products can be found operating in many countries across the world, successfully working in extreme conditions.

Somers have refined the chemical analysis of the material used in manufacture of our drop / breaker balls, which improves impact properties at ambient and sub-zero temperatures.

Raw material is melted to an exact specification which includes electric melting and vacuum degassing with hydrogen levels below 1.5 PPM at pouring which alleviates hydrogen de embrittlement.

During the forging process material is subject to a minimum forging reduction of 3-1. Immediately after forging we perform a secondary de gassing operation and an additional normalising heat treatment to refine the grain structure.

Fully forged balls have an advantage over cast alternatives with a fully homogeneous fine grained structure offering additional toughness and ductility resulting in less failures during service.

STEM Challenge

This year we are mentor for the STEM Challenge 2019 (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). The competition, to design and manufacture a product, is forging valuable links between local business and schools. In doing so it is promoting engineering to the next generation.

The projects aim is to boost student engagement with these key topics and aims to give them an understanding of how, what they learn in the classroom, will play a vital role in future careers.

In the Midlands section of the challenge contains 21 schools, with each one partnered with a different business in the industry.  We have teamed up to mentor local school Windsor High School, with Somers mentors being Victoria Allen and Mike Addison.  We hope to win with a green solution which we will help to design and manufacture using elements of STEM.
